Synopsis
Jagna is a young woman determined to make her own way in a late 19th century Polish village – a hotbed of gossip and ongoing feuds, held together by an adherence to colorful traditions and a deep-rooted patriarchy, rich and poor alike. All scenes were shot on camera and then painted by over 100 artists. The film consists of 40,000 paintings and 6 paintings per second of footage were used. The painting work required 1350 liters of paint. Wow… I didn’t expect this film to be as incredible as it was. Growing up in England, I didn’t get into much Polish literature. But not only was this film (based on the Nobel Prize nominated book) beautifully made and animated, the story was extremely tragic and real and the music is just perfect. I would recommend this film to anyone, Polish or not. It is not only an insight and commentary on Poland’s past, but also on masculinity, femininity, class and community.
