A German University Makes a Case for Sustainable Management of Reservoirs in Northern Ghana
Liebniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research, University of Bremen, Germany has issued a policy brief to help guide the conservation of reservoirs to ensure good nutrition and livelihood opportunities for rural communities in Northern Ghana. Among others, the brief recommends (i) formation of inter-sectoral working groups to promote sustainable use of reservoirs for both agriculture and fisheries production, (ii) integration of fisheries into local irrigation schemes, and (iii) targeted stocking of reservoirs to optimise fish production. It is based on studies conducted in reservoirs in Tono, Bontanga and Golinga in Northern Ghana.
