Synopsis
It explores Leni Riefenstahl’s artistic legacy and complex relationship with the Nazi regime, juxtaposing her self-representation with evidence of the regime’s atrocities. Can vile propaganda be great art? It’s a question that always comes up when discussing the work of German director Leni Riefenstahl. He is revered as one of the greatest German directors ever (by Quentin Tarantino, for example), but also despised for glamorizing the Third Reich.
Riefenstahl herself always denied being a Nazi herself
In his opinion, he was an artist who happened to work for Hitler. In interviews, he always insisted that he was not aware of the regime’s atrocities. After his death in 2003, this self-image was quickly shattered. The stark contrast between his own statements and historical facts was already the subject of the recent TV documentary “Riefenstahl”.

Director Andres Veiel carefully combed through his entire estate, searching for letters, newspaper clippings and official figures. This research shows even more clearly how manipulative Riefenstahl was. At the same time, it’s very fascinating to see how her huge ego and fearless ambition have carved out her place in film history, a Riefenstahl avatar in An Alternative Leni, created from personal letters and diary fragments in her possession. But in the end, the material itself was so clear that it can speak for itself.
Veiel convincingly demonstrates that his own worldview was completely in line with Nazi ideology
There is no doubt that Riefenstahl had a deep sympathy and admiration for the Nazi movement. Very revealing are the recordings of the television interviews, which were made when the cameras were running during the interruption of the interview. Riefenstahl repeatedly becomes very angry when questions are asked about her artistic responsibilities and her involvement in the Nazi movement. But the telephone conversations Riefenstahl had with many of her admirers reveal even more.
Andrew Veiel himself considers his film a lesson for today
When his artistic integrity was questioned, he received letters of support and phone calls of sympathy. Many Germans agreed that it was very difficult to resist the Nazi movement in the 1930s and that passive supporters of Hitler were judged too harshly. Riefenstahl’s ability to reinvent her own image and turn the past to her advantage is similar to the many hoaxes created by populists like Donald Trump.
