Synopsis
An author returns to his hometown of Jerusalem’s Lot in search of inspiration for his next book, only to discover that the townspeople are being attacked by a bloodthirsty vampire. Writer Gary Dauberman told Den of Geek in June 2019 that his goal with the remake of Salem’s Lot is to make vampires scary again. He wants to move away from the sexier, more romanticized undead that has infested pop culture for much of the past quarter-century, thanks to everything from Interview with the Vampire to Twilight to The Vampire Diaries. When Ben is reading old newspapers on microfilm at the library, a headline reads “Local Couple Victims of DUI.” The newspaper was supposedly printed in 1956, at a time when the term “DUI” wasn’t yet in use. References Trog (1970).
That’s testament to King’s work
TV Licensing. First off, I have to say that even when a Stephen King adaptation is weak, it’s at least still worth watching. This movie is lucky to be a King movie. That being said, it’s very mediocre. At the beginning of the movie I was very excited, everything seemed good, the atmosphere of unease was there and it felt very King.
Also, there’s no blood
But every aspect of the story that evolves is dropped. Very quickly we get to a point where people have simply disappeared from the town. It happens so fast and the remaining people just “know” that the cause is vampires. They also seem to instantly know who the main vampire is and it makes no sense. I’ve seen incredibly bad horror movies in my life and this isn’t bad, it’s just too fast.
It’s a shame
In a vampire movie. If it had been an 8-10 episode miniseries, it would have worked. The elements are there. The cast is there. I have to give credit for sticking to the source material, it shows that the creators had a clear idea of what they were working with.
